“Dialectical” describes a balance between acceptance and change — the idea that two seemingly opposite truths can both be valid at once.
DBT holds two things at once: you are doing the best you can, and you need to do better, try harder, and be more motivated to change. That dialectic — acceptance alongside change — is what gives the approach its name.
Sessions are organized around four skill areas that build on one another, moving from steadying intense emotion in the moment to reshaping the relationships and habits around it.
Distress ToleranceGetting through crisis without making it worse
Emotion RegulationUnderstanding and shifting intense feeling
Skills-based, structured, and originally built for the most intense emotional states.
Concrete skills to ride out an emotional storm without acting on urges you’ll regret.
Understand what a feeling is telling you, and learn to change its intensity when needed.
Ask for what you need and set limits, while keeping relationships and self-respect intact.
“You can accept exactly where you are, and still be moving toward somewhere better.”
